A Better Pat’s Rubberlegs Fly Tying Tutorial

Stonefly nymphs are in the water year round and the fish are always looking for them. Traditionally a Pat’s is tied in a large #6 or #8 long shanked hook, but I hate hanging up on the bottom and many of the nymphs I see under rocks aren’t that big. So tied mine on a short shanked jig hook and take refuge in knowing the fish don’t count how many legs they see.

If you’re not a tyer, you can pick these up hand tied by me.

The Recipe:
Hook: #10 Firehole 516 Jig Hook
Bead: 4mm Driftstone Slotted Tungsten Bead, Matte Black
Thread: Semperfli 12/0 Classic Waxed thread, Fluorescent Orange
Wire: .5mm (.020”) Lead Free Wire
Body: Small Hareline Chenille, Coffee/Black
Legs: Small Montana Fly Company Centipede Legs, Speckled Tan
Head Cement: Loon Water-based
